SUPPORTING MULTIRACIAL RESEARCH, ONE ISSUE AT A TIME

Healthcare

MASC is dedicated to improving the inequities in healthcare faced by multiracial people.  This includes ethical issues surrounding race based medicine and under-representation in the marrow donor database.  Understanding racial categorization and properly identifying people are key to achieving this goal.  This is one reason why we are involved in racial identification forms such as the Census.

To learn about why these issues are important and how you may help please visit MASC’s partner, MIXED MARROW.

Requests for Research

MASC regularly gets contacted re: requests for participants by researchers related to the multiracial community and multiracial individuals.  In general, we believe that adding to the body of knowledge about multiracial individuals through research is beneficial to our community

As a service to the community, MASC passes along the opportunity to participate in research.  Your participation is completely voluntary.  MASC does not officially endorse any research initiatives. As always, we do not sell or share your personal information with anyone. For this reason, we post the information on this site so you can choose to take part in the studies if you wish.

CALL FOR MIXED RACE ADULTS (18+) IN LOS ANGELES

Hello! My name is Jenn, I’m a graduate student in the Sociology Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. For my dissertation I’m conducting a cross national study examining a frequent interaction that I have in the US and abroad– being asked questions like “where are you from?” and “what race are you?” due to my difficult-to-place-into-one-category appearance. If you, or someone you know, is a mixed race adult (18+) living in the LA area and is often asked these types of questions, I would love to meet for a brief interview over coffee or a snack, my treat.  Please email me at JPSims@wisc.edu if you are interested in participating in the study or would like more information. Thank you for your consideration!

Hello,
My name is Steve Alcantar, and I would like to talk about a research study I am currently conducting as a member of the Sociology Honors program at the University of California Irvine. This study, taking place between the months of January and April 2011, focuses on the issue of government classification of mixed-race individuals as well as other matters concerning multiracialism today in the United States. As part of my research, I plan to conduct in-person interviews on campus with: 1) undergraduate students who are members of a monoracial organization at the University of California Irvine, multiracial undergraduate students attending the University of California Irvine, 2) adult multiracial members of a multiracial organization, or 3)researchers or professors who are well-informed and have done research on race issues involving multiracialism. Interviews will last about 30-35 minutes each. If you meet any of the aforementioned criteria and would like to know more about the study for the possibility of being interviewed, I will send an information sheet that goes into greater detail into the study as a whole. After you receive and have read the information sheet, please contact me by telephone at (510) 965-2030 to inform me of your decision as to whether or not you would like to be interviewed, or if you have any further questions pertaining to this study. I can also be reached by this email address as well: alcantas@uci.edu. If you know of anyone else who meets the previously mentioned criteria and may be interested in being interviewed for this study, you may give them my contact information if they would like to discuss this possibility with me. PARTICIPANTS NEEDED FOR A STUDY EXPLORING THE EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCES OF MULTIRACIAL BLACK PEOPLE RAISED IN WHITE AND INTERRACIAL FAMILIES

Greetings! I am recruiting Multiracial adults (18 to 35 years old) of
African or African American descent who were raised by white or
interracial parents/guardians (by birth or adoption) to participate in an
interview study about experiences with racism in academic settings and
parent/guardian approaches to addressing race and racism.

All participants will participate in one interview lasting approximately
90-120 minutes; some participants may be asked to participate in follow up
interviews. Participants will be asked questions about family background,
experiences with racism, parents/guardians’ views on race and racism, and
strategies for coping with racism.

I am a PhD student in the School of Education at UC Berkeley. My personal
experiences, as well as learning about the experiences of others who grew
up in similar situations, has led me to pursue this topic as my doctoral
research. By sharing your voice and experiences, you can help raise
critical awareness about the complexity of family dynamics and support
efforts to improve the lives of future African/African American descent
individuals who grow up in similar contexts.

If you or someone you know is interested in participating in this study
please contact me at snyderc@berkeley.edu.
