Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a Harvard graduate and current UCLA PhD Student doing a comparative study of black-white couples in Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I am comparing their experiences involving social networks, relationship histories, and the meaning that couples give to their relationship. This project entails my interviewing couples at their convenience on both settings. It will culminate in a PhD dissertation, a number of articles, and future books on the topic.

It has been very difficult to find these couples in the Greater Los Angeles area. Are there members of your organization that are involved in a black-white relationship? Would it be possible to put me in touch with them?

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at this email address (osuji@ucla.edu).

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Sincerely,
Chinyere Osuji

On 4/16/09 MASC’s (Multiracial Americans of Southern California) former president and co-founder, Nancy G. Brown co-led the Project Remix discussion on Census 2010 with AMEA’s (Association of MultiEthnic Americans) president Jummy Bullock to a diverse group of USC students. It was a meaningful gathering during which the history of the historic change in the census guidelines in 1997, allowing those of multiethnic descent to check one or more racial designations on the census forms, was explained, along with the history of the multiracial movement. The students also got to hear from the current AMEA president as she was preparing to leave for Washington, DC to attend the Census Advisory Committee meetings, which were established to continue the dialogues on census issues related to race and ethnicity. AMEA, and their affiliates, which include MASC, were able to secure a seat on this committee, for the first time in history, as a result of their lobbying the department of OMB regarding the issue of multiracial identity between 1987 and 1997.

Hello,

My name is Amanda Rivera and I am a fourth year doctoral student of clinical-community psychology at the University of La Verne. I am currently working on my doctoral dissertation, under the direct supervision of Christopher Liang, Ph.D. I am emailing you to ask for your assistance in my efforts to recruit individuals to participate in a web-based survey. To participate in the study, individuals must be 18 years or older.

The purpose of the study is to develop and conduct the initial validation of an instrument measuring racial experiences. Your participation will be an important contribution to psychological research and society by increasing our understanding of racial experiences. The study should take approximately 25-35 minutes to complete and your responses will be kept confidential. Participation in this study is voluntary and you may withdraw at any time.

This study has been approved by my University’s Institutional Review Board. The results of the study will be reported in an aggregate form, and will provide implications for psychology research and clinical settings. In addition to contributing to a greater understanding of racial experiences, participants will be entered in a raffle to win one of four $50 gift certificates to Target or Barnes and Noble.

Please help me by forwarding this email to friends, family, and colleagues who may be interested in participating. Additionally, please consider participating in the study yourself.

If you would like to participate in this study please visit the following website:

Dear MASC,
My name is Teresa and I’m an undergraduate student at the University of
California, Irvine working on my senior honors thesis in sociology. The
topic of my project has to do with the experiences of Asian and
African-American adult adoptees who have been raised by Caucasian
parents. I am doing a comparison of these two groups since Asians make up
the largest international adoptee demographic and African-Americans make
up the largest domestic minority adoptee demographic in the United
States. Although adoptees from these two groups have differing heritages,
I am also interesting in learning how their experiences are parallel each
other since Caucasian parents overwhelmingly represent the pool of
adopting parents. This research is very personal for me being an adoptee
from Macau, China and having been raised by my Caucasian father. I chose
this topic because although transracial adoptions go back several decades
in the U.S., I feel that the personal experiences of adult adoptees such
as myself are still little understood.

This study will consist of 60-90 minute one-time interviews with Asian and
African-American adult adoptees. I would be very appreciative if you could
distribute the enclosed flyer (in MS Word format) via e-mail to your
members who would be eligible to participate. If you have any questions,
please contact me at tlankfor@uci.edu or at (714) 222-6081.

Sincerely,
