Project Remix Review
by Jonathan ~ June 1st, 2009. Filed under: Testimonials. On 4/16/09 MASC’s (Multiracial Americans of Southern California) former president and co-founder, Nancy G. Brown co-led the Project Remix discussion on Census 2010 with AMEA’s (Association of MultiEthnic Americans) president Jummy Bullock to a diverse group of USC students. It was a meaningful gathering during which the history of the historic change in the census guidelines in 1997, allowing those of multiethnic descent to check one or more racial designations on the census forms, was explained, along with the history of the multiracial movement. The students also got to hear from the current AMEA president as she was preparing to leave for Washington, DC to attend the Census Advisory Committee meetings, which were established to continue the dialogues on census issues related to race and ethnicity. AMEA, and their affiliates, which include MASC, were able to secure a seat on this committee, for the first time in history, as a result of their lobbying the department of OMB regarding the issue of multiracial identity between 1987 and 1997.
